Themes/ Issues

Nearly every day of our lives we find ourselves involved in some type of social situation that provide us with meaning of who we are, our health, and our relationships. Our very identity depends on our class, age, gender/sexuality, race and ethnicity disability.
This course deals with these identities in relation to health. We will examine concepts of health, culture and ‘race’ from a cross cultural perspective. We will examine how health, disease, war, and healing are related to political and social structures, social processes, and social determinants of health within a human rights perspective. We will look at different cultural understandings of health, illness, and everyday health care practices. Our discussions will emphasize the connections between illness and the health care structures as well as the political and economic circumstances in Canada and around the world. This course will deal with current issues in discriminatory practices and mechanism that enable racism, prejudice to occur in everyday behaviours and the relationship it has with health, health care and health professionals. We will explore mechanisms that try to ensure freedom form racial discrimination within the health system.
