Theories of criminality

Theories of criminality have been faulted on the basis that they appear to have little to do with many forms of white-collar and corporate criminality. Using examples of individual white-collar offending and organizational law-breaking: a.     Explain which theories best account for these forms of crime; and
b.     Which major theories are most lacking and in which ways? Be sure to delineate the basic tenets of the theories you discuss, what the theory is and is not able to explain, and your own assessment of the theory as it relates to white-collar and corporate criminality. 2.     Based on the theories listed below, choose the one that you think is the best at explaining crime.

•    You will thoroughly answer all points to the 3 questions on the next page.
You will follow all the requirements listed below or you will earn a less than favorable score on the exam:
•    Header on each page should have your name, date taking exam, and class & section #
•    Use A.P.A. format for your in-text citations and references listed at the end of your writing.
•    1-inch margins (top, bottom, left, right) for each page
•    Use 12-point Times New Roman font
•    Text is single-spaced
•    Provide proper documentation for ideas, data, direct quotes, and paraphrases.
•    Include page numbers for direct quotes and specific points that are paraphrased from another author.
•    If you are referring to data from some source, you may cite a table number if this seems more appropriate than a page number.
•    If you construct a table of data collected by someone else, cite the source for the data in the table.
•    Bibliographic entries for books must include author, date of publication, title, and publisher.
•    For articles in journals, cite author, date, article title, journal title, volume number, and page numbers.
•    References to chapters in edited books should include chapter author, chapter title, name of book editor, book title, and book publisher.
•    Authors are not specified for some government documents; in such cases cite the issuing agency as author.
•    Citing your textbook or any course textbook is not allowed. You may read textbooks and perhaps use them to help you organize points about different theories, but you will not quote, cite, or in any way use them as a source or reference.
•    With the amount of time you have for this written exam. You have plenty of time to find academic sources of literature to use as material to back up what you are saying in your writing.
•    Acceptable sources are: academic journals, academic or edited books, and government reports.
•    Be sure to check and edit any mistakes in your document. Using spell-check as the only check for mistakes is usually not sufficient.
•    If you have too many errors – whether they are spelling, grammar, or word choice, etc. – your grade will suffer.
•    There is no required number of words/pages. All you must know is that you are required to fully answer all points to each question.

These are the questions.
1.     Theories of criminality have been faulted on the basis that they appear to have little to do with many forms of white-collar and corporate criminality. Using examples of individual white-collar offending and organizational law-breaking:
Theories:
Self Control
Anomie/Strain
Labeling
Differential Association/Learning

a.     Compare it to the other 3 theories and discuss how the theory you chose represents an improvement over the other two.
b.     Be specific and be sure to cite academic literature to support your argument.

3.     Schools have been identified in several criminological theories as important institutions related to juvenile delinquency. The school as a possibly criminogenic setting has recently gained attention due to highly publicized bullying incidents that have often resulted in violent shootings and suicides. The significance of this issue calls for more specific criminological theorizing to better understand the role that schools may play in fostering delinquency.
a.     Choose any 3 criminological theories and use each one to explain bullying behavior, as well as the other crimes that take place within school settings (e.g. school shootings/massacre killings).
b.     Based on your sources, which of the 3 theories you chose is best able to explain bullying and school shootings? Be sure to defend your answer by considering the strengths and weaknesses of each theory.
c.     Ensure that your explanations clearly show the differences, and, if relevant, the similarities between the three theories.
