Essays earning a grade of “F” will usually have one or more of the following characteristics:

_____ Inappropriate or unapproved topic.

_____ Lacking an introduction or conclusion or severe paragraphing difficulty.

_____ Large amounts of quoted material that without much/any connective metadiscourse.

_____ Uses one or more inappropriate sources.

_____ Lacks documentation

_____ Severe or persistent mechanical/writing issues that often impair meaning.

 

Essays earning a grade of “D” will usually have one or more of the following characteristics:

_____ No clear thesis statement or major errors in fact. May have a thesis statement that only announces the subject.

_____ Lack of clear organizational plan: may have insufficient introduction or conclusion or lack transitions.

_____ Overall lack of metadiscourse explaining sources or quotes.

_____ May depend too heavily on Internet sources, fail to illustrate comprehension of sources used, or use sources primarily to give background information.

_____ May fail to put bibliography in MLA format, fail to show understanding of the principles of parenthetical citation, or have major formatting problems.

Essays earning a grade of “C” will usually have one or more of the following characteristics:

Essays earning a grade of “A” will usually have one or more of the following characteristics:
