  Select ONE of the following topics and discuss fully, using appropriate textual references, biographical information, and class notes. Open book. Goal: 750 – 1000 words. Please confine your major essays to the 1000 word maximum.

  1. Using the Cherokee Memorials, discuss the main points and objections that the Cherokee make to retain their sovereignity.

2. Using the short stories, “Rip Van Winkle,” “Young Goodman Brown,” and “The Cask of Amontillado,” discuss the various authors’ use of irony in these stories.

   3. Using Longfellow’s “The Psalm of Life,”discuss the nineteenth century’s optimism as it appears in this poem.

3. Discuss, in detail, at least three of Thoreau’s arguments against the constant “busy -ness” of his time as they appear in “Life without Principle.”
4. Discuss the phenomenon of evil in the human heart as it appears in “The Cask of Amontillado” and “Young Goodman Brown.”
5. Discuss the numerous instances of Emerson’s comments on travel and society as they appear in Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Self-Reliance.
6. Citing William Appes, discuss his Bible based arguments against racism.

Formatting Requirements:

These essays need to adhere to the traditional academic essay requirements of an attention-grabbing introduction, well-supported body, and appropriate conclusion.

All work will be submitted as MSWord .doc/docx files. If the student cannot submit his work as a .doc/docx file, he is able to submit his work as a .txt, .rtf, .pdf, wpd, or notepad file.

No .WPS files or .PAGES files accepted. It is the student’s responsibility to avoid submitting his work in a .wps (MSWorks) or .pages (Mac) file format.

The major essays do not require internal citations; they do require a List of Works Cited and/or a List of Works Consulted and/or List of Works Used page, if researched work is included in the final form of the essay. All List of Works Cited and/or a List of Works Consulted and/or List of Works Used must include a url if not from the course text book.
