Length: Final draft: 1 – 2 pages

Goals: To look closely To be creative and playful, following ideas wherever they lead To explore outside the rules of formal written composition

To compose fresh and insightful writing

To provide several points of view or ideas related to a single subject

To trim away extra, unnecessary words

To consider the order in which you discuss various concepts

To begin and end with a flourish

{ Process: Please read through the whole assignment before beginning }

Collages are composed of fragments. These pieces are often varied or seemingly unrelated, but together they make a dynamic whole. The aim of this assignment is to make

a creative written work comprised of several disparate parts, each of which speaks about some aspect of the essence of the subject (in this case, a work of art).

Surprises are welcome – enjoy the experiment.

***********************

a) Select a work of art to write about (the postcard image you picked in class).

b) Look closely and carefully at it.

c) Let your mind wander a bit.

d) Free write. Write down anything and everything you can think of in any order: first impressions, stories that come to mind, quotes, different points of view, an

imaginary dialogue, etc. Be sure to explore several different aspects of your subject. Try to write continuously, but don’t rush. Strive for richness and quantity of

content at this point. Let the words flow without editing yourself.

e) When you have ample material, you are ready to circle back and revise. Pick out the best bits and cut away/delete the rest.

f) Develop and polish the best written segments without doing too much new writing.

g) Consider all of these segments and arrange them intuitively.

h) Again remove any wording that seems flat, dull, or unnecessary.

j) Carefully proofread (or have a friend or someone from the Writing Center
proofread). Note: for the final written collage, correct grammar and spelling are important. Errors will distract from your intended meaning.

k) Bring one paper copy of your final draft to class with the image
