Topic
Students are required to design a research study that is capable of answering the following question:
“Are pilots trained to fly at the University of New South Wales safer than pilots who are trained to fly at Griffith University? “
The assignment should be set out under each of the following headings:
Literature Review (10 marks /45)
Search for and select 3 journal articles that describe research studies that are relevant to your assignment. Read them and summarise briefly, under each of the

following headings, the main things you learnt from reading them:
•    Did they bring clarity and focus to your research problem? How?
•    Did they help you to design your research design? How?
•    Did they broaden your knowledge base in your research area? How? 
Proposed Research Study (35 marks /45) 
Describe the research study you will undertake to

answer the research question using the following table. Complete your answers in the right-hand column. You must use the table. Please leave the existing words in the

left column.
Describe your study in a few sentences. ie the “big picture” Just like if you were describing the Porsche versus Mercedes shoot off study during the Week 3 tutorial.

Classify your research design eg before-and-after; longitudinal; cross sectional

What is the research question for your study?
What is the objective of your study?
What are the hypotheses for your study? If it’s an experimental study, state the Null and Alternate hypotheses.
What are the variables you are measuring in your study? If it’s an experimental study, what are the independent and dependant variables in your study?
What are the measurement scales for each of the variables you are measuring.
Who will be your participants? How many participants? Age? Experience? etc
How will participants be selected and recruited?
What are the ethical issues in running the study? Is informed consent needed?
What type of data will be collected? Primary data? Secondary data? Both?
What equipment (eg simulator, real plane) and/or materials (eg questionnaires), if any, will you need to collect the data?
Describe the procedure you will use to conduct the study. ie Everything you will do, step, by step, to run the study.
How will you analyse the data? What data will you compare with what? What statistical tests, if any, will you use?
