Treat and Refer or Discharge Strategies for Paramedics.

‘Treat and refer or discharge strategies for paramedics are at best ineffective and at worst dangerous’. With reference to appropriate supporting literature, critically analyse this statement in relation to contemporary paramedic practice and make recommendations for future practice.

PLAN:
Intro (200 words).

To give focus and a high level of critical analysis, I’ve decided to look at 2 areas:

Elderly fallers (usually DISCHARGED). (800 words).

Hypoglycaemic diabetic patients (usually REFERRED). (800 words).

Both of these groups are contemporary, regular service users to the ambulance service.

At some point in the essay need to mention paramedic education (shift towards university away from vocational training), which allows for advanced patient assessment and management.

Show a knowledge about a variety of patient care pathways in the out of hospital setting.

Also mentioning the need for accurate documentation and effective communication with interprofessional workers.

No images / appendicies.

No compound references.

Please, minimal description and maximal critical analysis.

Although a lot of the literature is perhaps generic towards general refer/discharge strategies, please ‘manipulate’ around these 2 areas.

Conclusion (200 words).

No subheadings (such as intro, body, conclusion).

PLEASE, LIMITED FOCUS ON HISTORY OF PARAMEDIC PRACTICE!

– Also, ideally do not mention historical work such as Snooks (2004) and other historical data as it is outdated when the role was merely an ambulance driver role.
