Born into a well-to-do Massachusetts family, Richard Henry Dana, Jr. attended Harvard, then decided to sign on with a merchant vessel sailing to California. He kept a
journal of his travels; this journal became the basis of his book Two Years before the Mast. When he returned home, Dana became a lawyer and a politician. Obviously,
he wasn’t of the social class that most working class sailors were drawn. Yet all his life Dana championed the causes of the lower classes and working sailors.
