This requires a c.4000 word case study of a foreign policy crisis from the perspective of a
particular state, with particular reference to the relevance and usefulness of models of foreign
policy decision-making and diplomatic practice discussed in the first weeks of the course,
including the rational actor model, the bureaucratic politics model, and the organisational
theory model.
The aim of the exercise is to examine one country’s foreign policy decision-making during a
particular event/crisis/period of stress. It is preferable to choose a case study for which you
are able to reasonably reconstruct empirically the decision-making that led to a particular
foreign policy decision using primary and/or secondary sources.

The central objective is to check the evidence to decide which foreign policy model(s)
discussed are corroborated or not by the evidence relating to your chosen case study.
Note: you must consider alternative models not just the one or more that you favour or
suits your particular case study best.
