Unit 4 Lab procedure

Purpose:

  1. Draw and label the features of a divergent boundary
  2. Draw and label the features of a convergent ocean-ocean boundary
  3. Determine distance to an epicenter from seismogram reading

Procedure:

Part a    1) Print the graph paper or download the file for the Atlantic Ocean Profile from the link on the lab page.

2) Carefully plot the data points on the graph paper or use a graphics editor like paint to plot the data points on the electronic file.

3) Join the points in dot – dot fashion.

4) Label the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and rift zone on your cross-section. Draw in sea level. Sketch what you think should be happening below the sea floor.

Part b    1) Print the graph paper or download the file for the Tonga Trench Profile from the link on the lab page.

2) Carefully plot the data points on the graph paper use a graphics editor like paint.

3) Join the points in dot – dot fashion.

4) Label the Tonga Trench, Pacific Plate and the Indo-Australian plate. Draw in sea level. Sketch what you think should be happening below the sea floor.

Part c     1) Print the seismogram from the link in the lab page or download the file.

2) Label the arrival of P-waves and S-waves on your print or mark them using your graphics editor on the file.

3) Determine the lag time of the earthquake and record it.

2) Use the link to the time travel curves in the lab page to determine distance to the epicenter and record it.
