Using Pierre Bourdieu’s theories of cultural, social & symbolic capital, in relation to Indigenous Australians accessing tertiary/higher education
This
methodology chapter proposes to draw on Pierre Bourdieu’s (1977) theories of cultural, social and symbolic capital and investigate some of the major reasons why Indigenous Australians have challenges accessing tertiary/higher education and
achieve successful outcomes. It will highlight the disadvantages that exist in relation to Indigenous Australians accessing tertiary education and challenges they may face in a tertiary education context compared to their non-Indigenous counterparts. In particular it will detail the cultural and systemic factors that inhibit and/or enable tertiary education access and a lack of engagement/participation for Indigenous Australians.
Pierre Bourdieu’s (1977) theories of cultural, social and symbolic capital and his notion of ‘habitus’ and ‘field’ will be used as a conceptual framework to further understand some of the reasons why social and cultural implications exist for Indigenous Australians who are a minority/disadvantaged group in Australia in relation to them participating in tertiary education to better understand how Indigenous Australians can be further supported to gain access to tertiary education.
