NOTES RESEARCH 1
It is important that you conduct some primary research on your own for this project.   This may take the form of reading works of literature, viewing plays, films, television shows, studying photographs and works of art, or conducting interviews, observations, and surveys.
For this assignment, I want you to describe what you intend to do to create some raw data that will help develop your thesis and how the results will be used in the development of your thesis.   In this and all subsequent  sets of notes, I want you to begin by listing your thesis statement.   For interviews, surveys, and some observations, I may need to discuss the proper protocol with you, so be specific in these notes.  I have attached three examples of good Research Notes 1 assignments completed in previous semesters of this course.
Consult the texts for how to cite interviews and other primary sources.
Research Notes 2
For this set of notes, you will provide a description or summary of a primary source that you intend to use in your paper.   It should be one of the types listed in the lecture notes.  You should also indicate how the source will be useful as evidence; in other words, how it will work to develop your stated thesis.
As for each set of notes – list your working thesis at the top of the page.
As for each set of notes – also list the bibliographic information that you will need to create the entry for you list of references.    Choose APA or MLA format.
I am attaching the lecture on Primary Sources that appears in the unit folder.   Consult this for suggestions on Websites that provide you excellent access to primary sources.
Research Notes 3
For this assignment, you are to find an article in an online newspaper, journal, or magazine article that is relevant to your topic.  Use the links and suggestions given in the lecture notes for Unit 8 to be sure you have a reliable source.    Read the article or essay that you find, take notes on it, and submit these notes. In addition to the summary notes, I want you to list your working thesis statement and provide the bibliographic entry for your source (use either MLA or APA style – the one you intend to carry through to your paper).   For templates, a link to OWL is provided in the Course Materials area..   Otherwise, consult your texts – looking for online or electronic sources – newspaper or journal articles.
Research Notes 4
Locate a website that has information relevant to your topic.   A general Internet search using your key search terms should reveal several possibilities.   Evaluate the choices as your text and my lectures suggest.  Then take notes on the one you choose, extrapolating the information that you think you may be able to use in your paper.   As always begin with your thesis statement and provide bibliographic information (MLA or APA format) that will appear on your Works Cited or References page.
I have these suggestions for you of websites that contain relevant information on a variety of subjects:
•    pewresearch.org
•    npr.org
•    loc.gov
•    procon.org
These are more focused to certain topics that are being written about in this class:
•    nih.gov
•    deathwithdignity.org
•    womenshealth.gov
•    mana.org
•    energyfromshale.org
Research Notes 5
Use a library card catalog or the e-book feature of EBSCO to locate a book that is relevant to your topic. You also have to option to borrow a book from several other local college/university libraries  Take notes on the book or the chapter(s) that you will be using.    As always, include your thesis statement and a bibliographic entry (MLA of APA style) as it will appear on your Works Cited or References page.  Later due is to give you time to locate the book (use interlibrary loan, if necessary), read, and take notes on the content.
Research Notes – GALE Opposing Viewpionts
Go to the database – GALE Opposing Viewpoint in Context.   If you are writing on a common controverisal topic, you will find it as a separate section with many resources available.   Otherwise, you will have to do a simple search with keywords.  This site is geared to presenting both sides of an issue which will help you present the dialoguing aspect of your topic.   If the issue has warranted a separate section on the site, there is a very valuable essay that presents context and background and will contain the type of material you will need in the introductory part of your paper.  If you use material from this opening essay, you will need to give credit to GALE.  Suggested citation formats are provided on the site.
Find an article or essay – take notes that contain the assigned elements.
Research Notes 6 – EBSCO
Go to the EBSCO Host of databases.   After reading the description about what each of the databases offers, select those that seem likely to have relevant content for you.   Academic Search Elite is the most popular.  You may have already used Newspaper Source or E-book Collection for other assignments. Please be sure that you have read the lecture notes on using EBSCO as it points out how to use the “Cite” feature that will give the appropriate documentation for you.  Be sure to scroll down and select either MLA or APA, depending on which you plan to use in your paper.
