Visual Arts and Film Studies A raisin in the sun production proposal

Visual Arts and Film Studies A raisin in the sun production proposal

Project description
Capstone Project: Please submit your project to the drop box at the end of this instructions page. The deadline is at NOON on the date on your syllabus. Please note it is due BEFORE your final exam and that no late projects will be accepted. You may also bring it to my office, if you wish. Important: Use only WORD, (not Word Perfect or another program)

Directions:

Research and write a report assuming that you are a play producer putting together a proposal for investors (called “angels” in the theatre world) in order to produce a play on Broadway, in a major city, in a small city (P.C.), in a college theatre or in a community theatre. Do not write your own play, unless you are a published playwright. Please DO NOT choose a play from the “Synopses of Plays” included in the book’s website. Include a synopsis of the play, a short biography of the playwright, and a character breakdown including age, socio-economic background, character traits, etc. Prepare a rehearsal and performance schedule complete with technical rehearsals and dress rehearsals. Please note that the rehearsal period for amateur play productions normally takes 6 to 8 weeks of a minimum 4-night per week rehearsal schedule. Musicals take 8 to 10 weeks.

Prepare a budget that includes all possible costs for the project. Include payments for and function or reason for : royalty costs, score rentals (musicals only), rental of rehearsal spaces, rental of theatre performance space, payment for director, actors, designers (set, costumes, lighting, makeup, special effects), payment for stage manager, technical director, stage crew, shop foreman, carpenters, painters, house manager, ticket staff, ushers, security police, attorney, accountant, etc. See information at the bottom of this page on cost of staff. Research and include costs for set construction materials, backdrop rentals, costume materials or rentals, program printing, fliers, billboards, and other advertising.

You may or may not need all personnel in your production (such as accountant and attorney – only on Broadway or other big city professional shows), however, it is not a option to say that things are donated, or that people work for free. NOTHING should be free.

Decide your ticket price and number of performances needed in order to MAKE MONEY. Assume a 75% ticket sale. Then, prepare a portfolio that can be sent electronically to me including the following: The above mentioned information, justification for needs, job descriptions of staff; a floor or ground plan of one of the scenes in the play; costume plot and drawings of costumes for all the major characters. (You do not need to be an artist, stick figures will do. Please make sure that the work is your own. Photos of sets or costumes from the internet will not be accepted.) Important: THIS IS NOT A GROUP PROJECT.

DO NOT CALL LOCAL THEATRES AND ASK FOR ANY INFORMATION!!! YOU MAY GO ONLINE AT THE MARINA CIVIC CENTER AND THE MARTIN THEATRE TO GET THIS INFORMATION. KALEIDOSCOPE THEATRE DOES NOT RENT THEIR SPACE AND GCCC ONLY RENTS TO NOT-FOR-PROFITS, AND YOU’D BETTER BE EXPECTING A PROFIT, RIGHT?

VERY IMPORTANT! This project is due on the date listed on your syllabus and is worth 30% of your grade. It will not be accepted any later than NOON on that date. Please e-mail it to me and make sure that you sign it with your name! If you have a problem e-mailing it, you may bring it in to my office, AC 122, however,THE DEADLINE IS THE SAME!

Once again: This is NOT a group project. It is an individual effort.

Finally: Please remember to give credit to all your sources. Without this, the project will earn a 0.
