In considering aspects of Ray’s work that are relevant to the film, it’s helpful to go beyond the figures of the outlaw and official hero to think about other aspects of Ray’s two traditions. For example, a film’s depictions of the “settled life” in towns or in the justice system will indicate optimism or pessimim regarding the collective actions that define civilized life.
