FINAL PORTFOLIO

Purpose:
The Final Portfolio is a two-part assignment that gives you an opportunity, in Part I, to demonstrate your mastery of the skills you have cultivated this semester as a critical thinker, researcher, writer, and editor in one final argumentative essay: Writing Project 4. In Part II of your Final Portfolio, you will have an opportunity to revisit all you have learned this semester about Identity and Diversity through class readings, discussions, and writing projects, and produce a brief Reflection Essay in which you will explore how your thinking about Identity and Diversity has evolved as a result of taking this class.

PART 1: WRITING PROJECT 4

Context
On October 30th, 2014, Apple CEO Tim Cook published a statement in Bloomberg Businessweek in which he came out as gay. Cook’s decision to announce his sexual orientation publically made big news, and in doing so, confirmed that being gay in America—and especially being openly gay in the workplace—remains controversial. While Cook lauds Apple for being among the few American companies that take pride in “embracing people’s differences,” he laments the intolerance he sees elsewhere. When it comes to enjoying, as Tim Cook does, the benefits of a diverse and supportive workplace, Cook believes that “Not everyone is so lucky.”

For this assignment, we will use Cook’s comments—and the hype surrounding them—as an entryway to broader discussions on workplace diversity. The intolerance that Cook alludes to in his article, and that he infers gives shape to the (often quite subtle) climate of intolerance found in many American places of business, has and continues to contribute in pervasive and powerful ways to the general lack of diversity that we see in so many American workplaces. This assignment will give you an opportunity to explore matters of diversity not only as they apply to the American workplace generally, but also in terms of how they affect a professional field of interest to you.

In addition to Cook’s short essay, use the readings listed above (and provided on Bb) to gain greater understanding of the history of workplace diversity, as well as of current trends showing how American businesses are (and are not) adapting to the needs of our increasingly diverse population. You may, if you choose, draw from these readings to support your argument. But you must use at least five (and no more than ten) sources in your paper that you discover on your own. These sources may be academic, journalistic, or popular in orientation, and should not be more than fifteen years old.
