What makes a Poem a Poem: Define the term Poetry? 500 – 750 words.

Describe your early thoughts about poetry. Did/do you write poetry? or lyrics? You I
know, lyrics are poems set to music. What kind of music do you like? What kind of
poems do you like? Why do you like that kind of poetry? Feel free to share one of your
poems, if you write poetry, or you may choose to write an original poem as a conclusion
to your discussion.
Part II
Define the Poetry Glossary (list of words in your Schedule of Assignment). Choose ONE
poem from the List of Poems for Discussion and Essay on the Content Page. Make
sure your essay has an introduction (title of poem, author) and answer the following
questions: who is the speaker in the poem? Please N OTE: View the speaker as
someone other than the author. Therefore, engage your “critical thinking” skills. What
kind of person is he/she? What is the occasion and setting? Who/What is being addressed
in the poem? What is the central purpose of the poem? What is the tone of the speaker in
the poem? Tone is the attitude toward the subject: informal, intimate, formal, ironic,
playfiil, serious, and condescending are some examples. Discuss the imagery of the
poem. Finally, give a literal as well as a figurative meaning of the poem- In order to
receive full credit, he sure to answer all of the questions. For citing poetry review
page 1292, # 5 and 6. Be sure to quote and cite words and lines from the poem, or
major points will be deducted
