Which of the following five firms or industries is most Japanese? Rank all five from most Japanese to least Japanese and give reasons for each ranking. To answer this
question, you will have to develop your own definition of what makes a firm or industry Japanese and then apply that definition to the five examples.
The Meiji period Osaka cotton spinners and Mitsui trading
The Meiji period tea industry
Canon
Kyocera
Komatsu
The key to a good answer will be inclusion of the following four elements: 1) An argument, 2) A conceptual framework (feel free to use the Quick and Dirty Guides to
help structure your conceptual framework), 3) Use of concrete examples (drawn from lectures and the case studies), 4) Consideration of the historical context.
You could use examples in the following manner, “As seen in the large debt loads of Japanese companies,” or “such as the collusion of political imperialists and
business people in the nineteenth century opium trade,” or “as seen in the desire of the Mitsui Trading Company to eliminate middle men,” etc. As always, limit your
examples to the course materials. Use of outside materials will result in a reduction in your grade.
