Background
Why communicate research to policy? Environmental science research has great potential to contribute to government policy, the economy and human well-being. This can

range from informing site specific policy and habitat management on a nature reserve to helping to shape high-level policy informing adaptation to climate change.
What information do policy makers need? It is not enough to simply make research findings available to policy makers – they need to be able to understand the

implications and what action they made need to take. Not all policy makers are trained Environmental Scientists and they all have many other demands on their time.

Policy makers need the research context, findings, limitations and implications to be distilled in to key, easy to understand ‘take home’ messages in documents that

take a few minutes to read. Scientific evidence can inform policy, but it does not dictate it. Decisions are based on a number of factors (e.g. time frame, budget

allocation, economic impact etc.) of which scientific evidence is one component. Presenting a clear and concise message is key to ensure important research is able to

be considered alongside other concerns.

Brief
Choose the practical tasks below and present the findings from this work as a policy briefing note for senior policy makers in Defra, who are involved in the

development of national strategies and recommending areas for future research programmes:

The briefing note must include:

The policy briefing note must:

As a guide, no more than 600 words in the main text with 1-2 figures and 1-3 photos/images/diagrams.

Present no more than six references concisely using the British Numeric System. Reference lists are included in the two sides of A4 limit.
