For this assignment, you are required to write an essay that develops out of your understanding and approach to course readings,lectures, and research from non-course journal articles

Discuss some of the ways in which sites like Wikileaks, Facebook, and/or Twitter, might represent forms of alternative media. How does Wikileaks both resemble and differ from the traditional model of the bourgeois public sphere? How might social media, in the context of recent protest movements, such as the “Arab Spring,” be useful as a tool for mobilizing resistance? Can the “digital public sphere” make a viable contribution to democracy in the 21st century?

Research
For your essay, you must use 2-3 scholarly sources from academic journals. The following are not appropriate sources for this assignment
•Books
(including scholarly/academic books);
•Newspapers and magazines;
•Business and/or trade journals
(not critical)
•Government websites and statistical data (not scholarly, not analytical);
•Psychology journals;
•Non-academic websites and encyclopaedias (i.e., Wi
kipedia);
•Blogs and other non-refereed online sources; or,
•Any other similar sources.

Acceptable sources include:
•Political Science journals;
•Sociological Journals;
•Critical/Cultural Studies Journals
•Mass Communications and Media Studies journals;
•Political Economy journals; or,
•Any other similar academic journals in the social sciences and humanities (excluding psychology and business journals).

Make sure that your sources and your analyses are based up on
critical political analysisand are not psychological, medical, industry-based, or derived from popular mainstream
media.

*If you are unsure about the acceptability of a source, please check with your Professor prior to using it in your essay.
**Students who do not submit an essay will automatically be assigned a failing grade.
References and Works Cited/Bibliography
You must include a works cited/bibliography page at the end of
your essay on a separate (numbered) page. Including a source in your bibliography indicates that you have cited
this source in your essay. Any sources listed in your bibliography that are not cited in your essay do not count towards the required 2-3 sources.
Citing sources does not mean only inserting quotes. If you can explain the point/argument in your own words then it is not necessary to quote. You can paraphrase and cite the original source instead. This is correct and preferred –and shows your
understanding of the material that you are using for your essay. You must also cite a source when you are referring to an argument that is not originally yours.
Do notcite lecture material or power point slides.
Do cite course readings that you use in your essay (course readings do not count towards
your 2-3 external sources, but may still be cited in your essay).
Guidelines for Written Assignments
Your essay must begin with an introduction that explains the main argument or thesis that is going to be developed in the rest of your essay. Arguments must then proceed
logically and build upon your main argument/thesis. Your essay will be marked based on your understanding of the essay question, your ability to synthesize ideas from course
readings/lectures, the clarity and structure of your arguments, the originality of your ideas/arguments, and your ability to present your own voice in written form. Higher grades will be awarded to work that goes above and beyond the requirements for the
assignment.
All writing assignments must be double-spaced, in 12pnt Times New Roman font,with page numbers. Margins must be set at
1.25”. Please ensure that your name is on the first page of each written assignment. Bibliographies or works cited should appear on a new page at the end of your work. Use an
APA style guide for all written assignments.
Use internal citation; neither footnotes nor endnotes are acceptable for referencing sources (use endnotes
onlyfor information that is related, but not pertinent to your essay).
All written assignments must have a title (be creative).
Do not submit title pages!
All 3 pages must be stapled; assignments bound by a paper clip or folder will not be accepted.
