Basic Specifications for an Evaluation Essay/Argument:
1) The maximum page length is 5-6 pages. If you go over the maximum that is fine.

2) In addition to the expected length, you will have a Works Cited page to indicate sources used throughout the essay that were used in either a direct quote form and/or a paraphrase form.

The Sandwiching Technique consists of the following:
1) The Introductory Phrase—this introduces who stated the source material or where it is found;
2) The Direct Quote encapsulated by quotation marks “…” or The Paraphrase which does not need any quotation marks;
3) A few sentences that analyze, interpret, explain the Direct Quote’s or Paraphrase’s relevance to the example it is validating.

5) Never use the informal “I, me, my” voice nor never address the reader as “you” in your essays. Use the formal tone, preferably “one, we.”

HERE IS A SAMPLE OUTLINE OF AN EVALUATION ESSAY/ARGUMENT

Topic: Evaluating the movie, Dr. Zhivago

I) Introduction

• Lead-in: Brief summary of movie and appeal to reader’s love for movies in general.
• Thesis: Sir David Lean’s 1965 film Dr. Zhivago is a cinematic masterpiece that stands the test of time.
• Essay Map: The film’s actors, the storyline, and the period costumes contribute to the film’s greatness.

II) Body Paragraphs

A) Topic Sentence: One of the first virtues of Dr. Zhivago are the actors: Omar Sharif, Julie Christie, and Rod Steiger.

• Omar Sharif–describe a particular scene where his acting was superb. Analyze, also, how that scene contributes to the film’s overall greatness. • The struggle between the Communists and the wealthy aristocrats–describe a scene or scenes where the struggles between these two different groups gives the film great drama. Analyze how this scene or scenes contributes to the film’s overall greatness. Perhaps, luckily find a quote from a film critic or scholar and use it after this description and analysis to validate my own description and analysis–also properly use the Sandwiching Technique when using research.
• The inner struggle of Yuri to choose between his wife and his mistress–describe a scene or scenes where Yuri feels guilty for being in love with two women. Analyze how this contributes to the film’s overall greatness. C) Topic Sentence: Last, the period costumes of Dr. Zhivago are the beautiful ribbons on an already well wrapped package.

III) Conclusion

• End the essay on the same theme as the introduction. If the Lead-in was playing up to the reader’s romantic notions of movies and love stories, then end the essay with that same kind of flavor.
