Women and Advertisements
Project description
After reading these two articles, write an argument essay. The first article is “Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt”: Advertising and Violence which wrote by Jean
Killbourne, and the second article is (only one paragraph of it) “Just Do … What? Sport, Bodies, Gender” (paragraph 10 on page 740) which wrote by Shari L. Dworkin
and Michael A. Messner. In paragraph 10(page 740) of the article “Just Do … What? Sport, Bodies, Gender” Dworkin and Messner analyze the image of gymnast Kerri Strug
in the arms of her coach to illustrate a point about womens bodies and athletics. Jean Killbourne is similarly interested in what images of bodies tell us about our
assumptions about gender. Write an essay in which you use these authors strategies of visual analysis to examine a series of images of female or male athletics. Given
these images, what conclusions can you draw about the relationship between gender (and perhaps race) and sports? What is the significance of your findings?
