First set of essays… Please write no less than 3 paragraphs in response to these 2 questions. Separate answers.

-After reading Rubin, Fits and Becker’s article, please write a brief overview of the themes relating ethic identity and self-representation through the body that emerged from the data. What is the difference between body imaged in terms of "beauty" with dignity and self -respect? How do they resist negative cultural representations of their body? Please identify and explain 2 ways in which this article connects with the issues we have been discussing in class?

-In "Full Frontal Feminism" Jessica Valenti makes a variety of arguments about contemporary women’s lives and feminism. Please elaborate on specific connections you have found between Valenti and the Shaw text as well as class discussions. Be specific and support your arguments beyond opinion. Also discuss your impressions of the Valenti readings you have done so far.

-In Chapter 7, Shaw and Less discuss the processes in which power is established in families. Please discuss 3 specific examples of power in the family and how power is organized by gender and other systems of inequality and privilege. What are some specific models in which marriages or domestic partnerships reflect different ways in which couples live and work together?

-As discussed in Shaw and Lee’s Chapter 9, what form does "culture" take?—in the way this chapter describes it? How do these forms influence our everyday lives? Please discuss how popular and artistic culture are influenced by (and through) systems of inequality and privilege. What specific, contemporary examples can you cite that support or contradict Shaw and Lee’s assertions? Please note that the first question simply requires describing a bit of what you read and understood. The following questions are the place where I expect to see how you understand the material.
