Wright a formal Analysis, a Contextual analysis, and an interpretive paper for “Madam X”currentlydisplayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.Each of the three parts will be made as one essay and titled.
Part1: Formal Analysis minimum 2 pages
Your description should above all be THOROUGH. A description is an exercise in really looking at a work of art. Your reader should be able to recognize your description about Madam X. Please consult the research online or at the museum. “Elements of Art” and “Formal Visual Analysis: The Elements and Principles of Composition” for the types of formal qualities and compositional elements you should be looking for in your Madam X artwork.
Paer2: Contextual Analysis minimum 2 pages
A Contextual Analysis, as the name implies, examines the context(s) in which the painting was produced. What can be learned about the work and its meaning(s) by studying its historical context? What historical, literary, scientific, philosophical and social events could have shaped its creation? What insights can be gained about the work by studying the life of the artist? A Contextual Analysis places the painting with in a framework in order to better understand its relation to the artist, to the time period and to the viewer. For example: a painting from 1863 showing a child dressed as a soldier would be difficult to understand without knowledge that it was painted during the Civil War. Relate Madam X to certain social customs, to be more specific literary work, such as a play, a poem, or a novel or a popular movement. This part of the paper requires some research I recommend using Kingsborough art gallery.
Part3: Interpretation minimum 2 pages
After writing a thorough Formal Analysis and a Contextual Analysis you will complete your response paper with and Interpretation of work. An interpretation is not a personal response it is based upon careful consideration of the various contexts in which the art was created for instance the social economic and historical events and forces that shaped its creation. Although Interpretation often uses historical information to examine how various parts of a work were view to examine how the work in its entirety can best be understood in terms of the period in which it was created.
Often an interpretation of a work will incorporate one or other works as comparisons to show similarities and differences between them that help to explain the work’s connections to the period, to a particular movement, or to another artist’s work. Your interpretation can include a comparison to a work from this period.
