How can a country that has faced over 50 years of oppression project their silenced voices? The island of Cuba has been under the communist power of the Castro brothers, Fidel and Raul, since the 1950s. Under their rule there is constant repression of individual freedoms and basic human rights (Human Rights Watch, 2014). In an effort to create a window into these harsh realities, award-winning Cuban blogger, Yoani Sanchez, created Generacion Y. Generacion Y is Cubas voice to the voiceless through the words of Yoani. The blogger uses her website (as well as Twitter and a featured writer for the Huffington Post) as eyes for the rest of the world so that others may see the injustices and arbitrary punishments that occur in day-to-day life. Far too many people in the outside world are unaware of a government that refuses to recognize human rights. But with Yoanis power to be heard comes grave consequences. Yoani Sanchez has been blocked and censored from the Internet, abducted and arrested, and followed daily by undercover policemen but she continues her work everyday since 2007. With each blog post and Retweet, dissident blogger, Yoani Sanchez, continues to fight for the opposition against the Castro Regime that has instilled injustices of basic human rights.
