Paper, Order, or Assignment Requirements
In Henrietta Harrison’s book, The Man Awakened from Dreams, we witness late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century Chinese history through the eyes of a man from Chiqiao village in Shanxi. How does Liu Dapeng’s story intersect with the major political, social, and cultural events that occurred during his lifetime? How does our understanding of Chinese history change when view it through the perspective of one ordinary individual?
To answer these questions, you should rely primarily on Harrison’s book, but you must also supplement your analysis with examples from lectures, films, and class discussions.
I recommend use these resources:
Xiao Hong, “Hands.”
Lu Xun, “A Madman’s Diary” and “Kong Yiji”
