Addiction is a disease

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) paradigm theorises that addiction is a disease of the brain rather than simply a behavioural disorder. If the root of such a disease can be identified then perhaps medical treatment will result; however, this may have consequences on the ‘social’ treatments for addiction. Should we reconsider addiction as a disease?
