• This advocacy essay is related to my previous essay (uploaded). In my previous essay, I write about how affirmative action influences admission process in California. The action aims for provide equal opportunity for minorities; however, it ignores the benefits of Asian-American students.
• In advocacy essay, you can use as much as information from my previous essay to convince the reader that your solution is the best solutions you are giving.
• Solutions you can consider: 1. Top X percentage program in admission process. In 1997, the solution firstly passed by Texas House Bill 588. It named as “Top 10 Rule”. The law aimed to guarantee top 10 students to be enrolled in state-funded colleges. Currently, in UC system, there is a similar program that guarantees 9% of high school students to university admission. As long students meet GPA requirement and specific class rank, they will be enrolled. Personally, I do not consider it as an ideal solution. GPA and class rank are important for admission; however, these two factors are not the only factor that determines a “top % student”. 2. Resource allocation problem. In minority countries, they are lack of educational resources. The reason why affirmative action is unfair to certain Asian-American students is that even if Asians get higher score, they may be rejected due to the benefits only provide for minorities. However, if such minorities also get the high scores in exam, the opportunity will be equal to Asian-American students. For minorities, the government can come up with incentive plan for students to learn. For example, if students’ SAT score is above 2100, they can get financial support in their first year of college.
