Final Paper on inequality

Order Description

The combined midterm and final assignment consists in writing either one or two essays in response to the prompts mentioned below. The sum total of the essays should add up to a minimum of 12 pages (about 4,000 words).

Write only on question number one on – (in) equality.

Your response will be assessed in good measure on how well you support your essay with your reading of the assigned material, and for overall organization and coherence. You may additionally support your response by relying on other pertinent readings, whether posted to Blackboard or from you own research. Please use quotations judiciously; quote only as much as is necessary to support or illustrate your argument. Short quoted material should be followed by author’s name and page number, enclosed within parentheses. Extended quoted material, if necessary, should be indented as a separate paragraph. The 12-page count does not include title page or a bibliography page. Paper should be page-numbered, double-spaced, and in Times New Roman, 12 font, with one-inch margins.

1. What kind of propositions and arguments would you marshal in order to persuade a skeptic about inequality that some measure of equality is necessary and desirable? Presuming then the consent of the skeptic to your arguments, how would you entertain the suggestion that the resolution to the problem of widening inequality lies in expanding the field of educational opportunity? In addressing this second question, you will want to critically appraise the merit of John Marsh’s arguments that while more formal education may bring about individual economic advancement, it is unlikely that absent economic and political interventions/transformations, unacceptable economic inequality can be overcome.

Your presentation should incorporate some of these considerations:

a) The grounds for some “acceptable” level of equality. Why is equality desirable? Conversely, why is inequality problematic and to be contested? Reflections on this likely would extend from considerations of fairness and justice to economic and political considerations – issues of democracy, citizenship and economic and social functioning and well-being.

b) The causes and reasons for inequality and especially why inequality has worsened in the last approximately 40 years.

c) Why the expansion of “educational opportunity” has been widely advanced as a solution to the economic inequality and whether this approach promises a way out of the impasse, and whether other solutions may be more economically politically necessary and effective. You may additionally also include some consideration of which approaches may be feasible within the contemporary political moment.
