Islamic History Final exam

Islamic History Final exam

turn in a hard copy of your exams to the History Office (Clark B-356).
Your final exam essay must be uploaded to SafeAssign in order for it to count.
Since HIST 115 Islamic World to 1800 fulfills the Historical Perspectives requirement for the
AUCC (Category 3D), your final exam is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your abilities as
historians—that is, to demonstrate your ability to ask historical questions, evaluate primary and
secondary sources, and construct coherent and substantive historiographical arguments.
Consequently, for your final exam you will be expected to write a coherent, substantive, and
well-argued 3-6 page essay based on three questions related to the Ottoman, Safavid, and
Timurid/Mughal Empires. Of course, the most exciting part of your final is that you get to
formulate your own questions.
Your questions should be based on what you believe are the three most important
issues, events, persons, themes, etc. necessary to understand the Ottoman,
Safavid, and Timurid/Mughal Empires from their origins down to ca. 1800.
Possible topics include: theories of political legitimacy, administration, travel,
trade, technology, art, literature, architecture, education, Islamic law (shari‘a),
Islamic mysticism (Sufism), ritual and worship, Sunnism/Shiism, military history,
role and status of women, role and status of non-Muslims, etc. Be sure to provide
precise chronological and geographical context; that is, when and where things
happened, as well as how these empires and policies fit into the larger picture of
world history. Since this is a history course you will also need to pay close
attention to issues of continuity and change over time as well as how the three
empires are similar and dissimilar.
Since your final exam essay can be constructed with a variety of approaches, the approach you
choose will be judged on the clarity, content, and effectiveness of your argument. You will need
to defend your choices with clear and lucid arguments buttressed with specific evidence from
Dale’s The Muslim Empires of the Ottomans, Safavids, and Mughals; primary source readings
and videos on RamCT; as well as class lectures and discussions.
Your final exam essay should exhibit standard formatting: double-spaced text, Times New
Roman or equivalent, one-inch margins, page numbers on each page, your name on each page,
etc.
