Remediation Plan for a Difficult Teacher.

Assignment #3: Remediation Plan for a Difficult Teacher.

Case Study Scenario – Difficult Teacher
You are the Superintendent of Anytown Community School District #10. Your new principal, Mr. Jones, has just submitted a mid-year teacher evaluation for Mr. Smith, a science teacher at Anytown Middle School. Principal Jones has rated Mr. Smith as an unsatisfactory teacher. He lists several instructional deficiencies for this teacher in the union negotiated teacher evaluation instrument. Listed among these deficiencies are: no hands-on lab time for the students in his classes, as prescribed by the District #10 science curriculum framework; numerous documented student and parent complaints about unfair grading practices; documentation of no homework assignments, as prescribed by the District Board policy; 10 absences in the first three months of school with no lesson plans available for substitute teachers.
You review the past six years of his previous evaluations and find that the former principal and assistant principal have rated Mr. Smith as a satisfactory teacher on a union negotiated evaluation scale that includes possible ratings of excellent, satisfactory, and unsatisfactory. You notice suggestions from his previous evaluators about adhering to the district science curriculum and scheduling weekly lab time. You also notice suggestions about poorly written lesson plans and plans unavailable when there are substitute teachers in the classroom. You examine his employment record over a five-year period and note that he averages 15-20 absences per year.
Your new principal, Mr. Jones, wants to do something about Mr. Smith. He wants to either improve his instructional practices or fire him. Since Mr. Smith is a tenured teacher, he is covered under the state tenure laws, as well as the current teacher contract.
You make an appointment to speak with Principal Jones on Monday afternoon to discuss Mr. Smith and the next steps. What will you say to Principal Jones about Mr. Smith?

Assignment:   review the teacher remediation plan of our state school code (see the Illinois school code containing remediation plans). Work with Principal Jones to write a remediation plan that addresses the state code and works to improve instructional practices in Mr. Smith’s performance. Include in your plan suggestions for professional growth and a clear timeline of all prescribed activities by both Principal Jones and Mr. Smith. This assignment should be 5-6 pages and written in APA style. Due in module six.  Group will present the plan to the class. Bring a copy of the plan for all students in the class. For the difficult school leader option, you would do the same.
